Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway

Spearfish Canyon is a beautiful drive any time of the year and fall offers the most colorful drive through the Canyon. Mother Nature paints the leaves in shades of yellow, gold and red to accent the evergreen backdrop. The changing of the leaves normally peaks during the first week of October. BridalVeilFalls00036

As the elevation changes nearly 2,000 feet from one end of the Canyon to the other, you’ll see thousand-foot-high limestone palisades in shades of brown, pink and gray tower to the right and left of the highway as it twists through the 19-mile gorge.

Spearfish Creek lines the canyon floor with visible canyon waterfalls and popular roadside attractions. Bridal Veil Falls and Roughlock Falls are waterfalls you don’t want to miss on    this route—and you can eat at a good restaurant at a resort along the way, too.

Famous for its beauty, Spearfish Canyon was the location for several scenes in the movie epic “Dances With Wolves.” At the website you’ll see beautiful pictures of everything from roads to rivers to falls to canyons to resorts.

Historic Deadwood has been restored to offer the true “western experience.” The entire town is a Registered National Historic Landmark, but don’t let that fool you. Behind all the historic facades is plenty of modern-day fun. The famous and infamous have left their marks here.

There’s casino gambling and a wide range of other things to see and do. You can see haunts of such legendary figures as Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, as well as the saloon where Wild Bill was shot in the back while holding the “deadman’s hand.”

While you’re at Escape, you may escape to Oktoberfest here. For activities like this, parking can provide problems. We can schedule a bus for 40-50 passengers if there’s enough interest. This won’t be included in registration, but a schedule for Oktoberfest will be included when it’s available. There’s interesting variety in the websites for Deadwood, just type Deadwood and take a look.
